To be honest, I never really "got" pearls before.
I always thought they were for moms and aunts, round and shiny, worn with suits and high heels. They seemed to belong to a completely different world from mine, where I wear T-shirts and jeans every day and sprint for the bus, arriving all sweaty.
The first time I encountered this batch of freshwater pearls, I was actually a little bewildered. The supplier sent a whole bag, and when I poured them onto the table, they rolled around like a bunch of miniature billiard balls. I stared at them, thinking, "Oh no, these won't match anything in my wardrobe."
But I still picked one up and held it against my wrist.
And then I froze.
Do you know that feeling? A small bead, lying there quietly, saying nothing, yet your eyes just can't leave it. No diamond's flamboyance, no gold jewelry's clamor—it's just a soft, gentle light, like the non-blinding sunlight through a window in the early morning.
I wore that pearl all day. I saw it when I typed, when I drank water, and it gently swayed on my wrist as I walked. Suddenly, I felt like today I was a little different—not prettier, but more serene.
Yes, serene.
Later, I realized that's what pearls are. They don't clamor to announce, "I'm here," but when you look down and see one, you feel like the whole world slows down. They're suitable for any occasion, any outfit, any mood—if you want to dress simply, they'll simply accompany you; if you want to dress
up, they can shine with you too.
So I started including a small note with every order, which says:
"I hope that when you wear it, you find your own serenity."
Because I finally understood that pearls don't require you to become someone else. They just gently remind you that you are already gentle.
Oh, and by the way, my closet is still full of T-shirts and jeans. But now there's a pearl on my wrist.
And that pearl is just right.
